Biodiversity Conservation

The protection of natural ecosystems and biodiversity is one of the most important building blocks of sustainability at both global and local scales. At Limak Çimento, we too carry out our activities with regard for the environment and societal well-being, holding the responsibility to protect biodiversity at the highest level. Within this scope, we implement comprehensive strategies to minimize environmental impacts during activities such as mining and cement production. We create biodiversity inventories in the areas in which we operate and regularly assess the potential impacts of all our operations on biodiversity. Through the Biodiversity Policy we have established, we create value by carrying out practices oriented toward the Sustainable Development Goals. When planning our operational activities, we take into account World Heritage sites, the Category I–IV protected areas of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs). In all the work we carry out in these sensitive regions, we take great care to protect rare ecosystems, species, and habitats. Furthermore, wherever possible, we develop science-based restoration projects aiming to increase the biological diversity of these areas. In this way, we not only protect existing ecosystems but also strengthen them further, contributing to a sustainable future.

Future Goal: SBTN and Global Leadership

At Limak Çimento, we are taking our biodiversity journey to the next level. In the period ahead, our strategic focus areas are as follows:

  • Science-Based Targets (SBTN): We will turn our biodiversity targets into global commitments of certified scientific validity by publishing them on international platforms such as the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN).
  • KPI-Oriented Management: We will make our performance measurable and improvable through concrete KPIs such as the number of protected species, the size of restored areas, and net biodiversity gain.
  • The Power of Education: By extending the conservation projects and local education programs we have launched in Balıkesir to all our plants, we will continue to be a sectoral reference point in biodiversity management.

Our Vision: To sustain our presence as an "ecosystem partner" that not only protects but enriches biological diversity, by bringing our production activities into harmony with the cycle of nature.
